Letter from a Mother Reflects Best Republican Thinking as She Gives Advice to Her Children

Recently we received an email from an involved mother that reflects how many of us in The Republican Party view governemnt, party, and our families. It is worth sharing.

As a party we need to appeal to the “younger” generations! My husband and I grew up in a generation that didn’t give a hoot about our government or our rights as citizens…That’s a sad statement about what we were taught in “Social Studies”. It took us many, many years to appreciate the great Democracy we were inherently born into. Now, in our 30’s, we finally understand what our roles are in our Government. This is mostly due to the fact that we have our own families that are impacted by the “rules” and “regulations” imposed by our government.

My sons had a great conversation with my ex-husband (their Dad) this past week. He picked them up on the 4th of July, and they were wearing their SD41 Republican Party t-shirts. He, as a devout Democratic, didn’t know just what to think about it. He knows that our sons are politically active in some cause or another, but seeing their Republican t-shirts made that fact very real to him. His Dad, who passed away a couple of months ago, instilled very Democratic values in him and his siblings (bless him and his Dad for being involved in our great democracy and their RIGHTS as Americans!) He and his Dad were very close. They shared Democratic values, and I respect that to this very day. Most importantly, I teach our sons to respect it.

I sat down with my three sons (my two and my step son) and my current husband, and talked to them about our local (Minnesota) government. We all agreed that the Republican Party supports our family and the Family Law Reform we are so desperately in need of to protect my little step-son, who I adore as much a my ‘biological’ sons. We came to the same family consensus that we came to two years ago when my husband and I attended our very first neighborhood Precinct Caucus at Cornelia Elementary…We need to commit our time and efforts to the Republican Party to support our little family! My stepson is the product of a failure of the “system” designed to “protect” him. Family Law in Minnesota is antiquated and doesn’t serve the needs of children of divorce or paternity cases in this current time.

Now, please understand that I assured my sons that they hold the rights of Democracy and freedom…they are NEVER to commit to a ‘cause’ they are opposed to. They will learn about what “fits” them as they gain understanding of their surroundings…this means that as they become adults, they are free to choose whatever “fits” them and their beliefs. This applies to all aspects of their lives, including government. Right now, as young men, they simply commit to whatever Mom and Dad tells them is important. I have made it perfectly clear to my sons that they can choose whatever they need to choose to support their own belief system. AND they can do so without fear of retribution from their parents! As they mature they will be allowed to choose for themselves.

However, Republicans have a history of supporting Family Law Reform. Please believe me when I say we did our research before committing this much of our precious time and energy to a cause. Our boys deserve the fundamental right to have their parents equally involved in their lives (all 3 boys are from a divorce situation). Further, they deserve to know the following…

  1. They are citizens of the State of Minnesota.
  2. They are citizens of the amazing United States of America.
  3. Whatever State they choose to live in as adults has it’s own laws, rules and regulations
  4. They MUST respect and investigate their local and Federal laws.
  5. They MUST be involved in the great Democracy they were fortunate enough to be born into as Americans!
  6. They have the absolute right to decide which Party they belong to, without retribution from ANY of their parents, family members, or friends! It’s absolutely, without-a-doubt, up to them to decide which Party, if any, they adhere to, which should support their own belief system.
  7. Their parents will, undoubtedly, support their choice of Party belief system, if any.
  8. They deserve to live in a State that will protect their best interests, rights, and beliefs. If not, MOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!
  9. They will be accepted at any political function, no matter which Party, as long as they are respectful of the beliefs and rights of ALL Americans. ”Please”, Thank you” and all other formalities apply at whatever function they’re at! They should feel at “home” at any political function!
  10. They will never be made to feel guilty about their roles as Americans. It’s their fundamental right to be as involved, or as apathetic, as they chose to be.

They will be introduced to ALL aspects of their City, State, and Federal Government standards by their parents.

So, we will support the Party that supports our family. That’s it. It’s pretty simple and direct. Our family will be there at dinners, conventions. parades, picnics, WHATEVER, as long as we are HEARD as citizens of Minnesota and the USA! Our family, as a “blended” family, is fairly indicative of modern day Minnesota and America. Further, the five of us make up a HUGE part of ‘schooled’ citizens…We ARE NOT taught our RESPONSIBILITIES as citizens of a Democracy! Hopefully we, as parents, can lead our children and show them the way of their responsibilities. I don’t particularly care if they adhere to my belief system. My sons are encouraged to believe in their own spiritual beings. I just want my legacy, passed on to my sons and future generations, to be one of involvement in SOMETHING important to them!
