Party Endorsed Candidates Sweep Primary
Five Republican endorsed candidates with Republican opponents in the Tuesday, September 12th, Primary Election swept to victory and earned a place on the General Election ballot in November. Locally, House District 41B incumbent, Neil Peterson earned his spot with a 67% total over his opponent, Mark Chamberlain. “This is the first hurdle. Now on to the contest with our DFL friends in November”, Neil said at a small gathering after the count.
Other opposed candidates, Tim Pawlenty for Governor, Mark Kennedy for U.S. Senate, Jeff Johnson for Attorney General and Rich Stanek for Hennepin County Sheriff all topped their party challengers and will represent the Republican Party in November. None of the victories were unexpected.
3rd District Congressman Jim Ramstad also appeared on the ballot, even though he was unopposed. Minnesota election rules call for all candidates for a post to appear on the ballot if one candidate has a challenge in their party. One of Jim’s opponents was challenged on Tuesday. Regardless of the number of votes received, Ramstad will appear as the Republican candidate in the General Election.
State Senator Geoff Michel and Representative Ron Erhardt did not appear on the ballot in the primary, as no one running for their seats was opposed in Tuesday’s election. Earlier, on Thursday, September 7th, Andrew Borene, Senator Michel’s opponent on the DFL side, in a surprise move, withdrew from campaigning for the senate seat.
